Switch

Posted on by

A switch is a network device that connects multiple computing nodes to form a LAN and does switching of data at the data link (layer 2) of the OSI Layers. The switch uses star network topology where it becomes the central component of the network of the connected computer nodes. The data transmitted from the nodes are forwarded by the switch to other nodes within the network domain. A switch is a single Broadcast domain and multiple Collision Domain network device. The switch has multiple ports ( 4 port switch, 8 port switch) to which nodes are connected. Each port of a switch is a collision domain and thus a switch divides network domain in multiple collision domain. Switch can divide network into multiple broadcast domain using Virtual LAN (VLAN).
